What is a Breast Master?
With the rise in popularity of Breast Augmentations or ‘boob jobs’, this is a great question. Breast Augmentations have steadily increased over the past 5 years and are one of the most popular procedures being performed. In a report produced in 2016 by The Australian Breast Device Registry, it is estimated that 20,000 Australians are having breast implants inserted annually. This in turn means that there are increasingly more surgeons, performing breast surgery to keep up with the demand. In the past, to maintain currency in practice, surgeons would attend aesthetic surgery conferences that covered an entire array of procedures. With a small portion dedicated to Breast Augmentations. This is now not good enough. With constant advances in surgical technique and implants, more needs to be done to stay abreast (pardon the pun) of breast surgery and to develop Masters of the breast.
The field of breast surgery is so specialised that it requires its own conference or symposium, so that up to date information and research can be shared amongst the leaders in this area. A group of surgeons have identified this need and the inaugural Breast Masters Symposium will be held later this year in Sydney. This is being chaired by our very own, Trusted Surgeon and multi-award-winning, Dr Michael Miroshnik, who is renowned by consumers as the breast master. He is not alone in his pursuit for excellence and has pulled together many leaders in this field to form a committee for the symposium. The scientific committee consists of:
Dr Mark Magnusson, Current President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Surgeons. Dr Magnusson has been performing life changing surgeries for the last 18 years, with a special interest in Breast and Body contouring surgery.
Dr Mark Ashton, Current President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Editor-in-chief of the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Taylor research lab.
Professor Anand Deva, Director of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine and a founding member of Macquarie Cosmetic Plastic Surgery. Professor Deva is also a consultant at two teaching hospitals. Professor Deva is considered a leading academic and devotes a lot of his time to the research of Breast Implant Illness, ALCL and Biofilm.
Dr Ingrid Hopper is the project lead at the Breast Device Registry. Dr Hooper’s focus on Breast Implant Devices, the uptake, and surveillance, are imperative to ongoing research and crisis control.
All the above surgeons have an unwavering commitment to excellence, patient outcomes and the art of Breast Augmentation. Whilst we see the line-up for the scientific commitment as impressive, this most often gets lost on consumers. They do not understand or appreciate the passion, dedication, and commitment these people have. But together with the extensive local faculty, it is shaping up to be an amazing symposium.
For most patients, having a breast augmentation is truly life changing. Especially when the patient is well informed, the surgery is performed to the highest standard and the post-operative care is executed immaculately. It is fabulous when patients achieve a new-found confidence and the implants feel as if they were meant to be. However, when this is not the case, it is devasting for the patients who have ongoing complications and revisions. This highlights that more attention needs to be focused on the seriousness of the surgery. This is real surgery, with real consequences and life-changing results. Surgeons need to be appropriately trained and have adequate experience, to perform breast augmentations. At Trusted Surgeons, we frequently hear “my friend had Dr XYZ and hers are great”, or “my neighbour went to Thailand and she is happy.” But how do consumers know who is a great breast surgeon? How do they know who is a safe? And how do they trust the surgeon knows the best implant choice? The consumer doesn’t really know. But you can certainly narrow down who is qualified, who has experience, who specialises in Breast Augmentation, and who is committed to ongoing excellence through doing your research. The surgeons worth their weight, are the surgeons who believe Breast Augmentation deserves a symposium which specialises in the art and science of aesthetic breast surgery. These surgeons believe in sharing their experiences, good and bad and are constantly looking for the best techniques to minimise complications.
Therefore, ongoing education and sharing of knowledge is so imperative. Everyone can learn from unforeseen outcomes, just like everyone can learn from new discoveries. The Keynote speaker, internationally regarded as a leader, a pioneer, and academic is Dr Peter Hedén from Sweden. Dr Hedén has an extensive biography. He was one of the first plastic surgeons in the world to use of Botulinum toxin and Hyaluronic acid fillers. Dr Hedén has developed several techniques in relation to breast devices, and shares his knowledge via lectures, all over the world. Dr Hedén is a member of the editorial board of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. He also wrote the patient information book: “Plastic Surgery and You”.
If you are a surgeon reading this, then this is an event not to be missed. There is no doubt this will be a sell-out symposium comprised of the best breast surgeons in the world. There is great comfort for patients, knowing there are surgeons out there committed to ongoing training and excellence. Constantly developing their skills to achieve the best results whilst minimising complications. We cannot wait to share more on this exciting event and congratulate the organising committee on creating this opportunity for the industry and consumers who will benefit.
Breast Masters is being held in Sydney at the Hilton on the 18th - 20th October 2018. For more information you can head to www.breastmasters.com.au
