What you should know about getting breast implants

Breast Implants are clinically referred to as Augmentation Mammoplasty. It involves using implants or fat to increase the size the breasts, or restore volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

Breast Augmentation is useful for patients that have undergone surgery relating to the breast area, increase self-confidence, correct deformities or genetic imperfections. The purpose of this surgery is to enhance breast size, including to improve the shape as well as restoring symmetry and volume.

Patients are able to choose the type, size and shape of the implants to be inserted during the consultation with the surgeon. Round implants result in a fuller projection, and higher profile options can result in more projection. Anatomical or teardrop implants follow the natural shape of the breast. However, as they are not the same shape, there can be some concern regarding the implants moving and requiring surgery to correct. Smooth breast implants are the most natural feeling and can move within the breast implant pocket, simulating natural movement. However, they may have some visible rippling. Textured breast implants develop a protective lining around the breast implant that makes them less likely to move as well as less likely to cause capsular contracture.

What to expect from the surgery

The breast augmentation procedure takes around one and a half hours, under general anaesthetic. The surgery starts with an incision in the crease under the breast or in the armpit near the lower edge of the nipple. Through the incision the surgeon creates a pocket in the breast tissue which for the implant to sit in. During enlargement surgery, the implant can be placed either underneath the muscle or directly behind the breast.

Depending on the surgeon and the needs of the patient, the surgery can be day surgery whereby the patient can leave on the same day. Alternatively, patients may be required to remain in hospital overnight. Following the surgery patients may experience pain and feel uncomfortable. Pain medication will assist in alleviating this. It is also recommended for patients to recline at a forty-five-degree angle to assist with pain and recovery. Patients are encouraged to allow two weeks to recover and recuperate before resuming daily activities. Walking is possible as soon as the anaesthesia has worn off, however caution is recommended. Patients will be able to resume full lifestyle activities six weeks following the surgery. Scarring will gradually fade until they are to fine to notice.

The patients can expect to enjoy full results of the breast augmentation surgery eight weeks following the surgery. It is important to note that breast implants are not designed for the duration of a lifetime. As the body changes, the breasts also change, annual examinations by a plastic surgeon are recommended.
