A full face lift, (rhytidectomy), is the most comprehensive surgery to reduce the signs of aging. It improves the loose skin around the neck and jawline as well as targeting deep wrinkle lines and creases in the corners of the mouth.
Patients who are not confident in their looks may choose to have full face lift surgery to enhance their appearance. Many people who seek this surgery often suffer the effects of sun damage, premature signs of aging, facial sagging or unwanted wrinkles, creases or deep lines.
The procedure starts by making an incision that begins in the temporal hair area, then downwards in front of the ears, curving underneath the earlobe before extending up behind the ear and occasionally into the hairline. The surgeon separates the skin from the muscles and tissues, this loosens the skin so it can be placed effectively back over the face. The surgeon lifts the skin from the temple area repositioning the tissue and removing the excess fat and unnecessary skin. Once the surgeon is happy with how the muscles, tissue, fat and skin is positioned, the skin is placed back over the face - very smoothly - using stitches and/or metal clips to close the incisions. A padded supportive dressing is placed over the face, occasionally with drainage tubes if necessary.
The recovery period for a full facelift is a minimum of one week. During the recovery period avoid lying down flat and keep your face elevated. This will assist with pain and swelling. The patient can expect to feel uncomfortable, with elements of pain within the first 48 hours, however this should be manageable with medication. Swelling and bruising is to be expected after the surgery however this will gradually fade in the days following the procedure. It may take up to six months for the benefits of the surgery to become completely evident. Within the first two months’, patients are required to avoid a variety of activities including swimming. It is imperative patients wear sun protection especially during recovery.
The results of a full-face lift can last up to ten years, however the more extensive the surgery the longer the results will last. In saying this, a more extensive procedure also makes the recovery time longer also.
A lower face lift is a surgical procedure that improves the signs of ageing in the face and neck. This procedure is specifically focused on the neck, jowls, jawline and mouth area.
Lower facelift surgery rejuvenates the bottom of the aged face by tightening its drooping structures, loose ‘neck skin’ and jowls. Procedures to fix these problems include trimming excess skin and smoothing it down to eliminate facial creases. This will also improve areas such as the lips, chin, corners of the mouth and smile lines.
The procedure requires the surgeon to make incisions in front of the ear that continue down and around to the back of the ears. The surgeon separates the skin from the tissue and muscle. They then remove the excess fat from the area and tightens the muscles to correct unwanted sagging. The skin is smoothed over the face and any excess skin it also removed. The incisions are closed by stitches, sutures and/or metal clips. Depending on the individual patients needs and desired results, the surgeon may suggest incorporating liposuction or other treatments to enhance the procedure.
The recovery time will depend on the depth of the procedure; however, a minimum of two weeks can be anticipated. It may take up to six months for the full result to become apparent. The first fourty-eight hours may be uncomfortable, due to surgery, swelling and bruising. Pain medication and elevating the face will assist in reducing the pain and promote recovery.
The results are dependent on the type and depth of the surgery. Generally, the results will last up to five years.
A mid facelift is a surgical procedure that enhances the mid face region including the lower eyelids, nose and cheeks. A mid facelift aims to restore and smooth the mid face area, creating a younger appearance to the lower eyelids, nose and cheeks.
Unfortunately, gravity has adverse effects on the face throughout the aging process as the face loses elasticity. A mid facelift is particularly useful for patients seeking cheek elevation. It corrects under-eye bags, dull, hollow upper cheeks and protruding nasal folds.
The procedure begins by making small incisions into the muscle tissue on the face. An endoscope (small camera) may be used if the surgeon chooses to view the surgery internally. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will adjust the tissue of the muscles and face by pulling up the middle part of the face, while tightening the skin in the process.
The recovery time will depend on the depth of the procedure; however, a minimum recovery of two weeks can be anticipated. It may take up to six months for the full result to become apparent. The first forty-eight hours may be uncomfortable, due to surgery, swelling and bruising. A procedure conducted with the endoscope has a faster recovery time with less swelling and bruising than more traditional surgical methods. Pain medication and elevating the face will assist in reducing the pain and promote recovery.
The results are dependent on the type and depth of the surgery. Generally, the results will last up to five years. The results of mid face lift are most effective when the neck and lower face are firm.
A mini facelift is also referred to as a short-scar facelift or an S- Lift procedure. A mini facelift is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes a small portion of excess skin and re-drapes the skin over the treatment area, creating a tight, smooth result.
A mini facelift is suitable for patients with minor face drooping, treating the jawline, neck and cheeks. This procedure generally does not treat the forehead or eye region.
The mini facelift procedure is warmly referred to as a lunch time lift. The procedure is performed with anaesthetic taking up to an hour and a half to complete. The surgeon makes three incisions in and around the natural ear curves and sometimes into the hairline behind the ear. Once healed, the incision scars are difficult to see. Following the surgery patients may experience discomfort which can be managed with pain medication. The patient can also expect swelling and bruising which will gradually fade over the weeks following the surgery, the application of a cold pack may assist with the swelling and bruising.
The patient will be able to notice the results of the surgery within two months following the procedure. The surgery will leave some scarring; however, this will gradually fade following the procedure.
