The abdominal wall is comprised of muscle and the tissue that holds the muscles and organs together. An abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck tightens loose skin in the tummy area following significant weight loss or pregnancy. This procedure is also helpful for patients who wish to correct scarring from stretch marks on the abdominal area.
Abdominoplasty surgery assists patients wishing to correct flaccid or unwanted abdominal skin, a high level of fatty deposits around the stomach region, a bulging abdomen, separated abdominal muscles, stretch marks below the naval (belly button), decrease the size of the waist.
An abdominoplasty procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in up to three hours. The surgeon commences the procedure with an incision from hip to hip. A second incision is made at the naval (belly button). The surgeon removes the excess skin in the lower and upper abdomen area tightening the muscle and the skin. In a full tummy tuck the skin is completely re-draped as a part of the smoothing and tightening. The naval may also be repositioned as part of the process. The surgeon closes the incisions with stitches and/or claps carefully and purposefully to minimise the placement and severity of any scarring.
Patients will feel a tightness in the abdominal area which may be uncomfortable, pain medication will assist managing this. The patient can resume daily activities up to three weeks following the surgery and will be required to wear a compression garment throughout the recovery. Strenuous activities including exercise may be resumed six weeks following the procedure. The surgeon may insert a cannula or similar to assist with drainage in the treatment area. The procedure will also result in swelling and bruising which will fade in the weeks following the procedure.
Patients will be able to appreciate the results of the surgery six months after the procedure. A scar may be evident below the pubic line; however, underwear and bikini bottoms will mask the scarring.
