The word ‘plastic’ is derived from a Greek word meaning to mould or shape. How a person looks has a major impact on how they feel about themselves. If a person does not feel ‘normal’, their confidence is impacted, limiting their interaction with other people.
For thousands of years, plastic surgical techniques have been used to correct or restore the appearance of people afflicted by trauma, disease or congenital malformations. As part of their training, modern day plastic surgeons are immersed in these techniques. Consequently, restoring people back to how they used to be, with minimal scaring or deformity, is a foundational hallmark of every fully trained plastic surgeon.
Since I commenced practice 25 years ago, the applications of plastic surgery have expanded dramatically. As well as correcting deformity, plastic surgery has become widely accepted as a means of rejuvenation and augmentation. This has come about because women are more financially independent and consequently have more choice than at any time in history. Coupled with this is an obsession with image, spearheaded by celebrities with their ‘perfect’ photographs adorning magazines and social media. Given that at any moment of the day, our own personal image can be posted, with or without our consent, for millions to see, has many of us reflecting on how we would like to be seen.
When women, particularly mothers, come to see a plastic surgeon, they often have two overwhelming feelings: fear and guilt. Firstly, they are terrified of dying under anaesthetic. That is true of most people undergoing a general anaesthetic however for a mum, she is worried about who will look after her children if she doesn’t make it through. Further to that she is making a choice to have the operation. She is putting herself at risk and for this she feels guilty. The guilt is compounded because perhaps for the first time she is putting herself first, rather than the family. She could be spending the money on school fees, or the mortgage, or a family holiday and yet she is choosing to spend money on herself.
The above is true for most mums who have the courage to visit a plastic surgeon. My reassurance to them is that they will come through the anaesthetic. I have never lost anybody with an anaesthetic and I only work with high quality anaesthetists, so the chances of something going wrong are remote. Secondly, when the operation is successful and they get what they want, they will feel more confident, feminine and sexy. The biggest beneficiary is their partner, closely followed by the children. When a mum is more confident and feminine, this is felt by the children who can tell there is something different and more solid with mum.
The common theme with plastic and cosmetic procedures is that they make a difference in how a person feels about themselves. For a woman in particular, this confidence flows out to those around them. It is why I love what I do. I make a difference in one person and this flows out to many others.
When I was a toddler I crawled up a stove and put both palms on the hotplate. This left me with full thickness burns on both palms and as I grew I was very self-conscious of them. When I was six mum took me to the local GP for an injection. I came away wanting to be a doctor. I was fascinated with books about doctors and the human body. When I was thirteen the scar on my right hand began to pull my fingers in and I was referred to a plastic surgeon. Under general anaesthetic, he released the burn scar contracture on my right hand using a skin graft. After he had removed my sutures, I decided I was ‘going to be like that man’.
Almost 25 years later I graduated as a Plastic Surgeon and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). I had attended Monash University and attained a Bachelor of Science (BSc), majoring in physiology and pharmacology, then achieved my basic medical degree, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
I commenced my medical career at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, receiving a broad base of early surgical training in general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and vascular surgery. However, plastic surgery was my passion and I trained for 2 years at the Victorian Plastic Surgical Unit at the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital learning from some of Australia’s finest plastic surgeons. The following two years was spent performing microsurgery on rats as part of a research project for which I was awarded a Masters of Surgery (MS). During this time I assisted three of Melbourne’s best plastic surgeons learning the nuances of cosmetic surgery. My final two years of training was spent in the UK, working at St Thomas’s Hospital, with Big Ben visible from the operating theatre and then at the Mt Vernon hospital just outside of London.
Returning to Australia in 1991, I commenced plastic surgical practice in the south-east of Melbourne. Initially this included the management of trauma and reconstructive work, however as the practice grew I became more focussed on the management of skin cancer and cosmetic surgery. After 16 years in private practice I moved to Singapore to work with a consulting, training and coaching company primarily focussed on developing leaders. During this time I developed my communication skills and in particular I learned to listen to people so I could genuinely understand what they wanted.
I returned to plastic surgery in 2013 a much wiser and compassionate human being with a renewed passion. I love what I do, consulting and operating in Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and Rockhampton. To be trusted to perform a procedure that often transforms lives is one of the greatest privileges I can imagine.
Are you a patient of Dr Malcolm Linsell?WRITE A REVIEW
Dr Linsell performed breast reduction surgery on me at East Sydney Private Hospital last Friday 6/4/18. The entire process was extremely professional, thorough and non-confrontational. Dr. Linsell is brilliant. He is reassuring, comforting and holds your hand through the whole process. I was terrified about having this procedure done but Dr Linsell is very understanding, listens to your fears and worries and is kind and humble. His personal assistant Jackie is wonderful, guides you every step of the way and makes everything go very smoothly. There is obviously pain and discomfort post-op but that is covered well with prescribed medication. I am 5 days post-op and have already experienced relief from back and neck pain! Amazing! ???? For anyone considering any type of cosmetic surgery Dr Linsell is your “go-to” man!!!
I highly recommend Dr Malcolm Linsell. A++
Dr Linsell is extremely caring and patient. My surgery was in Cairns and I first saw Dr Linsell on 60 minutes. I am so glad I chose him for my mummy makeover. He gave me his phone number, answered all my questions and his staff are amazing. I highly recommend Dr Linsell, I can finally feel comfortable again, wear the bikini I wore before breast feeding and I am not longer embarrassed in front of my partner. Thank you Dr Linsell for giving me my life back!
I cannot speak more highly of Dr Linsell. From the moment I walked in the door I felt at ease with him. I was extremely anxious about having any surgery done and about spending the money on myself instead of my family. I have always hated my breasts, and was petrified at the prospect of having to show them to someone I didn't know. Dr Linsell could sense I was anxious, took my hand and reassured me that he was there for me. He put me at ease and I was very very comfortable with him. Honestly such a gentleman. My results have been amazing and I will refer anyone to him. I feel so much more like a woman now.
Amazing, Dr Linsell is so professional, caring, and nice. Not only are the results amazing, but his bedside manner was fantastic - super lovely surgeon. I had disliked the appearance of my genitalia for a number of years and I decided to do something about it! I called multiple surgeons in Melbourne regarding the labiaplasty procedure and Dr Linsell's website was the only site that had not just the office number but his own personal number too. I called and he was very warm and personal, answering all my questions as opposed to some other surgeons' offices who didn't really answer my questions and just insisted on coming to a consultation (which I didn't want to pay to do unless I had an idea beforehand of the procedure and the cost). I also spoke with Jacqui who is the executive assistant, and she was so happy to help with all my questions and concerns, and gave me a cost estimate (which was very reasonable, and I had the option to opt for local instead of general anaesthetic, should Malcolm determine it be appropriate after a consultation as it would depend on each person's exact procedure) which I wanted before going in for a consultation. The consultation was very professional and Malcolm made me feel very comfortable and relaxed as we discussed what I wanted. Malcolm absolutely LISTENS to what you want and truly cares about making you happy! He really wants to deliver the results you want. I underwent the trim method on both sides. I wanted the tucked in look as having excess skin sticking out not only looked bad in my opinion, but also felt uncomfortable when walking or running at times. The procedure was very easy and the lovely Jacqui (Malcolm's Executive Assistant) was there the whole time making me feel relaxed, she even brought oreos which she knew I loved :) The initial hours after the surgery were painful as the anaesthetic wore off naturally, but the prescribed painkillers soon dulled the pain significantly! Also, Malcolm gave me his number to call anytime I needed and was very reassuring that everything was normal. The swelling was not as bad as I thought it would be, and after a week the majority of the bruising had gone down. Dr Linsell gave me several post-surgery appointments to make sure everything was good. I'm so happy with the results, which were already visible after 3-4 weeks of the procedure! It's been a few months now and everything looks amazing, just how I wanted, and everything is functional. I'm so thankful for Malcolm and Jacqui and their professionalism, skill, caring and personal nature. Thank you both!
Malcolm Linsell is an exceptional plastic surgeon. He is very talented and really takes his time to listen and understand what the patient wants to achieve. His care from beginning to work with a patient to the very end is excellent and thorough. I have had 2 procedures and am absolutely delighted with both and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Malcolm - he is an amazing surgeon.
I had an initial consultation with Malcolm Linsell regarding what I was wanting to accomplish with my face. I followed this consultation up with 2 further appointments and Malcolm did not hesitate to spend the time with me so I could have a total understanding of the operations. His attention to detail made me feel that I was in very safe hands. Following the procedures (Half face lift and Upper eye lids ) Malcolm and his team follow up was very thorough and very caring. His attention to detail was very professional. I am thrilled with the results and would not hesitate to recommend him as a very talented surgeon.
Dr Malcolm Linsell, professionalism takes pride in you and his work, by making you feel the best you've felt and looked in years. Thank you so much for given me my life back after, all these years , I should've done this sooner.
